Women’s History Café: Celebrating Women in Music Through the Ages

Celebrate Women’s History Month at Whittington Park Community Centre this March with two inspiring Women’s History Café events!

In this special series of lectures and recitals, renowned music historians and singers Dr Carola Darwin and Sofia Brumfitt explore how music has long created opportunities for women, even in periods when they were excluded from public and commercial life.

When: Thursday 13th March, 6:30PM - 8PM

The Other Voice: Women Musicians in Vienna 1900 With Dr Carola Darwin.

Vienna in 1900 was a hub of artistic and intellectual innovation, home to figures like Gustav Klimt, Sigmund Freud, and Gustav Mahler. But what about the women?

This talk explores the lives and music of the talented and often-overlooked female composers, performers, and teachers who played a crucial role in shaping Vienna’s vibrant cultural scene. You’ll also have the rare opportunity to hear their music performed live.

Dr Carola Darwin is a lecturer of Music History at the Royal College of Music and is also an accomplished opera and concert singer. Her work includes the première of Endless Forms Most Beautiful by Cheryl Frances-Hoad, and she recently featured on BBC Radio 3’s Composer of the Week, discussing Johanna Müller-Hermann. She is currently writing The Other Voice: Women Musicians in Alma Mahler’s Vienna and will soon record songs by Müller-Hermann and Mathilde Kralik as part of an RCM-funded project.

Thursday 27th March, 6:30PM - 8PM

Rants and Lamentations: Music from the Restoration Stage With Sofia Brumfitt.

Step into the lively world of Mistress Mary Hodgson, a bold and brilliant performer from the Restoration era, and explore the music and stories of women from the 17th century.

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn, listen, and connect with others while celebrating the often-overlooked women of music history.

Where: Whittington Park Community Centre, Yerbury Road, N19 4RS

Cost: £10 (Tickets include a delicious bowl of vegan pasta pesto. Feel free to bring along drinks or a salad to share!)

Everyone is welcome - this event is open to all, not just women. Book your place now and be part of this unique celebration of Women’s History Month!
